Allegedly started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow the Great Chicago Fire burned from October 8th through the 9th. Although it bypassed stockyards, freight yards, and hundreds of factories it destroyed the entire commercial district. This catastrophe claimed the lives of 250 Chicago citizens and forced another 100,000 to lose their homes. Lincoln's original draft of the Emancipation Proclamation was also destroyed.
